It becomes necessity for buying the wireless router in your home if you have more than one computer or devices to access the internet. In the modern world, smartphones are the preferred choice to access the internet and popularity of the tablets are increasing every year. It is more convenient to enable the internet access to your home by configuring the wireless instead of subscribing to the mobile internet connection. There are multiple choice in the market to choose your preferred router and you can choose the level of signal strength too. To enable the Wi-Fi access, you must have the broadband internet connection, one ADSL modem and one router. This article explains in detail on how to configure the wireless access by using the industry popular router Linksys. If you have any doubts, please post it in the comments section.
Buy a Wireless Router
The first step is to buy a wireless router from the shop. In this article, we explore the Cisco’s Linksys. Normally the routers come up with different price ranges based on the signal strength. If the router has the good signal strength, it can even pass signals to multiple floors in your building. Also, the router may have the built-in ADSL modem. In that case, you need not buy a modem separately to connect the internet. The following are the content of the Linksys router’s pack:
- Wireless Router
- Two Ethernet Cables to connect your PCs or Laptops (Yes. Four Ethernet output provided for connecting the PCs through wire)
- CD for configuring the router
- One power adapter
Once you unpack the parcel, take the CD and run it. The following are the steps to configure the wireless setup using the Linksys router. I have provided all the screenshots taken during the installation for the easy understanding.
Step 1: Run the CD and Start the Linksys Setup Wizard
Step 2: Accept the license agreement and click next

Once you click on the next, the setup wizard will start checking the network access and availability of the adapter. You have to ensure whether you have don the following steps:
- We assume modem is properly connect to the internet.
- Internet cable from modem is currently connected to PC. Remove that and connect it to Linksys Router‘s internet port.
- Take one of the Ethernet cable provided in the pack and connect one end of that cable to Ethernet port.
- Connect the other end to the PC’s Ethernet port.
- Connect the router’s power adapter and switch on the power.
This step would check all the settings and configurations are proper to proceed with the Linksys wireless setup. If anything is not properly connected, this step would fail.
Step 4: Enter your router password
If all the configurations are proper, Linksys wizard will start the process of setting up the router to your PC. In the first thing, it will prompt you to enter the router’s password. The default user and password for the Linksys router is admin and admin. You can not change the username, but you can override the password. This can be used while accessing the router’s home page through browser (http://192.168.0.1/).
Step 5: Linksys Wireless Name
Give your wireless a name. This name will be visible on to devices or laptops when trying to access the Wi-Fi internet. We can call it is name of the wireless hotspot.
Step 6: Linksys Security Standards
Set the appropriate security standards for your wireless setup. Normally it is classified under three categories. The default one selected is most secured and preferred once. And, the security key generated is used while connecting to this wireless hotspot. This is important to note down this value.
Step 7: Wizard configures the router
After the above steps, the wizard would start configuring the router. This may take few minutes because Linksys would connect to the hardware’s and configure the router.
Step 8: Linksys is Configured!!
If the below screen is shown, then your router configuration is perfect. You can access internet through your PC’s, laptops and mobile devices.
